What is a tadpole?
A generic term for frog larvae. The body is nearly spherical, has no extremities, has a developed tail and breathes gills. It is found in familiar freshwater areas such as paddy fields and ponds, and has been popular since ancient times. Upon maturation, metamorphosis occurs first in the hindlimbs, then in the forelimbs, and the tail gradually absorbs into the body and disappears. Usually, larvae metamorphose within 2 to 3 months, but bullfrogs etc. overwinter as larvae. It also refers to amphibian larvae other than frogs, but in this case it is characterized by not losing the tail even when transformed.
